New Patient Exams

When you arrive at our office, you will be welcomed warmly by our front office staff. One of our friendly hygienic assistants will review your medical and dental history with you and take a full set of X-rays and intraoral photos. You will then receive a comprehensive examination, including a screening for oral cancer, gum disease and cavities, along with an orthodontic and cosmetic analysis. If any issues are present, the doctors will discuss what can be done to help, answer all your questions and present you with a comprehensive written treatment plan that outlines how they will bring your mouth back to ideal health.

Children’s Dentistry

To help children develop a long-lasting positive impression of going to the dentist, we offer what we refer to as “happy visits” for children as young as two years old. During these visits, we help children get accustomed to our office by letting them guide what happens. For example, they can sit in our dental chair and we can read them a story, or they can just ride up and down in it. The visit ends with them getting a toy from our big treasure box. We then add something new each subsequent visit until your child gets used to the full dental visit routine.

Oral Cancer Screening

Most people are surprised to learn that, on average, one American dies every hour from oral cancer. The primary reason for this consistently high death rate is that far too often oral cancer is discovered at too late a stage to be effectively treated. Early detection and diagnosis is therefore vital and can make a tremendous improvement in life expectancy.

This is why we make oral cancer screenings an integral part of our examinations and use the state-of-the-art VELscope® Enhanced Oral Assessment System to do it. The VELscope illuminates any abnormalities in the mouth, including cancerous and precancerous growths, that may not be discernible to the naked eye. With this high-tech tool, we can spot oral cancers at an early enough stage to potentially prevent you from becoming a statistic!

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease (also referred to as “periodontitis” is a bacterial infection and inflammation of the gums that becomes worse over time if it is not treated. As it progresses, the disease causes increasing damage to gum and bone tissue, creating deepening pockets in the gums where even more aggressive and damaging bacteria can lodge and eat away at your teeth. Left untreated, gum disease can eventually result in the loss of one or more teeth and, because it is very easy for the bacteria to get into your bloodstream, it can lead to serious issues with your overall health too, including an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, respiratory disease and complications with pregnancy.

Perhaps the most sinister aspect of gum disease is how many people have it but don’t know it! The CDC reported in 2012 that one out of every two Americans over the age of 30 has gum disease, and over 70 percent of adults 65 or over have it. Most people are not aware they have gum disease because it may not cause pain or discomfort until it has progressed to an advanced stage. That’s why getting an oral examination from our experienced doctors as soon as possible is so important.

Our doctors thoroughly check for gum disease using X-rays and looking for pockets, bleeding and other signs of infection. If they find signs of gum disease, they will devise a customized plan to treat the problem effectively. This could involve scaling, irrigation and administering specific antibiotics.

All people are unique, and so is every case of gum disease. Since not all patients develop the same species of gum disease-causing bacteria, our doctors use a quick and easy saliva sampling to identify the DNA of the bacteria present in order to determine the most effective antibiotic for every case.

Gentle Tooth Extractions

Our in-house oral surgeon, Dr. Shivane Gupta, is an expert in extracting teeth. He very carefully removes them, making sure to conserve as much natural bone around the socket as possible. Dr. Gupta also performs a procedure called “socket preservation” that protects the space where the tooth formerly was and helps to prevent bone loss.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to emerge in the very back of a person’s mouth and are by far the most difficult teeth to extract. Not only are they positioned the farthest back in the mouth, but they also are often impacted (blocked by other teeth and prevented from emerging normally through the gums). As a result, their extraction is best left to an experienced oral surgeon like Dr. Gupta, who is trained to remove them quickly without causing any damage to the surrounding bone and gum tissues.

Root Canal Therapy

If you have a damaged tooth that is infected or is likely to become infected, you may benefit from root canal therapy. Root canal therapy is a highly successful restorative treatment, and a tooth repaired with a root canal can last a lifetime.

Although root canal therapy has a reputation for being unpleasant, the toothaches associated with an infected tooth root are probably causing you more pain than the treatment will. We will provide sedation to help keep you comfortable throughout your visit. We also use the latest instruments and methods for cleaning the canals of your teeth and use our 3D CT scanner to make sure that the infection has been completely eradicated.

TMJ Treatment

The jaw joint (also called the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short) connects the jaw to the skull. It is responsible for jaw movement and enables chewing, talking and yawning.

Stress, compulsive clenching of the jaw, frequent teeth grinding or poor alignment of the jaw can cause TMJ disorders. This can lead to chronic headaches and other issues, including clicking or popping in the jaw, earaches and neck and shoulder pain.

Our doctors provide effective diagnosis and treatment for TMJ problems. To analyze your TMJ issue, we use a computerized device called a T-Scan® that provides a 3D view of your bite force to determine if there is an imbalance when chewing. Our doctors also take a close look at your teeth and how they fit together when biting down. With this information, they then customize a treatment plan to adjust and fix your TMJ for optimal alignment and function.
